L-R blogging beauty queen Joyce Burton Titular, Miss World Philippines National Director Cory Quirino and PR Manager Rosary Ysmael Palanca
Took a day off from work to cover the first Metro Manila screening of Miss World Philippines at Mall of Asia on Friday, May 27, 2011. Many thanks to the beautiful National Director of Miss World Philippines Cory Quirino for inviting me to help screen the beauty queen hopefuls at the Entertainment Center of MOA.
I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the screening was more like a mini-pageant – Emcee Poncy Quirino introduced each applicant as they paraded on stage. There were four fashion segments – casual wear, party dresses, sporty outfits and even gowns! All of the 50 plus hopefuls had the chance to introduce themselves AND answer questions from the screening panel. There was even an optional talent portion where a some showed off their dancing or singing skills. At the end of the pageant, all ladies were serenaded by opera singer Al Gatchalian. WOW!
Since this was just a screening, no awards or elimination happened. According to Cory Quirino, the screenings are primarily meant to give girls a chance to experience what its like to be on stage. She adds that the screenings are also great way to announce the rebirth of Miss World Philippines. Once all screenings are done, she says the MWP team will announce the final set of candidates.
Just in case you’re wondering, this is NOT the final screening in Metro Manila; Miss World Philippines National Director Cory Quirino says there will be another one for sure, stay tuned to this blog for updates on that. In the meantime, the Miss World Philippines team will also be going to SM Malls outside of Metro Manila to screen possible candidates in the provinces. For more information visit the website here – the application form can be downloaded from that website.
Deadline of for Applications is end of July 2011.
You can also contact the following numbers – 09173702644 or 09102382461 if you have questions!
Miss World Philippines 2011 applicants in their long gowns... Cory Quirino is the lady in a red dress next to the applicant in white...
Just a word of advice to all of you who want to attend any of the Miss World Philippines screenings: PLEASE come prepared with at least 4 outfits – casual wear, a party dress, sporty/fun wear and a gown. If you can bring more than 3 outfits then you’ll have a wider choice. And make sure you have the right shoes for your outfits and the appropriate underwear!!! Then if you want to participate in the talent portion you also need to bring an outfit for that and your music or minus-1. Coming ill-prepared does NOT impress the screening committee, girls!
To all the ladies who joined the MOA Screening, ABQ wishes you all the BEST!!!

Congratulations to Cory Quirino and her Miss World Philippines team for a VERY successful pageant. The Miss World Philippines franchise was formerly held by Bb. Pilipinas but now, with Cory Quirino at the helm of the prestigious pageant, we can expect new and exciting things for Miss World Philippines!
When I stop to think about 2011 and the all the victories and awards the Philippines garnered in International Pageants, it takes my breath away. Imagine – all of the winners in our major pageants won recognition abroad! To stun the world with our Filipina beauties is quite an exciting honor! Here is my personal list of best (and worst) Beauty Queen stories for 2011.
It’s not a complete list, mind you, so if there is ANYTHING I might have missed, please leave a comment at the end of the article and tell me what Beauty Queen story from last year rocked your world!
1) DANICA MAGPANTAY BECOMES THE FIRST EVER FILIPINA TO WIN THE FORD SUPERMODEL OF THE WORLD CONTEST!
Danica Magpantay, the daughter of Filipina Supermodel Lala Flores (now a pro-make-up artist) brought us the first exciting news of the year by winning the Ford Supermodel title on January 22, 2011! On that day, Danica Magpantay became the first-ever Filipina to win the prestigious modeling contest. She is now based in New York, working for Ford Models.
2) CORY QUIRINO TAKES OVER MISS WORLD PHILIPPINED FRANCHISE FROM BPCI
January 2011 ushered in a shocking revelation – after 19 years of being under Bb. Pilipinas, the Miss World Franchise was suddenly in the hands of TV Celebrity and Beauty Expert Cory Quirino! Many Pinoy Pageant fans welcomed the change of leadership but those of us loyal to BPCI felt the pain of losing the Franchise. I was caught in the middle – feeling bad since my heart belongs to BPCI but feeling excited because I knew that Cory Quirino would breathe in new life and bring new blood to the Miss World Philippines beauty pageant.
Miss Quirino proved herself to be a formidable beauty queen maker when her first winner – Miss Philippines World 2011 Gwendoline Ruais romped off with the 1st Runner-up Title in the Miss World 2011 beauty pageant held in the UK!
3) BEAUTY QUEEN AND ACTRESS PILAR PILAPIL SURVIVES KNIFE ATTACK!
On April 14, 2011, Pilar Pilapil (Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1967) was apprehended by two men while she was entering her car, stabbed and then left for dead in the Antipolo area. Pilar Pilapil managed to crawl through dense bushes and rough terrain to seek help from a stranger. The story was shocking and even more so when police revealed that Pilar Pilipil’s own sister-in-law could be the mastermind of the attack. Click here to follow updates on Pilar Pilapil’s case.
4) MISS EARTH 2008 KARLA HENRY SURVIVES STABBING INCIDENT!
It was a bizarre year of attacks on our beloved beauty queens; Karla Henry became the year’s second beauty queen victim of a stabbing incident. An incident that almost took her life. Thankfully, Karla Henry was rushed to the hospital in time and doctors were able to fix her up after surgery. I had the opportunity to visit Karla Henry and bring her some flowers at the hospital where she was recovering. Click here to read the story.
5) SHAMCEY SUPSUP PLACES 4TH IN MISS UNIVERSE 2011 WITH HER TSUNAMI WALK!
And we all thought Venus Raj’s major major 4th Runner-up win in last year’s Miss Universe could not be topped! Here comes Shamcey Supsup with her eye-popping Tsunami walk in the Miss Universe 2011 beauty pageant! She took it one step higher and grabbing the 3rd Runner-up sash. Shamcey outdid pageant powerhouses USA and Venezuela, I am SO proud to say!
6) DIANNE NECIO WINS INTERNET VOTE AND BECOMES FINALIST IN MISS INTERNATIONAL 2011!
Dianne Necio fought hard and won the Internet Vote award in Miss International 2011. It is not clear though if winning the Internet Vote gave her an automatic berth in the Top 15. Nevertheless, it was a great honor for Dianne Necio and those who voted for her online! A great honor for the Philippines too
Evangeline Pascual did it in 1973, Gwendoline Ruais did it again in 2011! Although the Philippines has never won the Miss World title, these two women proved that victory is not an impossible dream for our Filipinas! Gwendoline Ruais’ 1st Runner-up victory also underscored the genius of beauty expert Cory Quirino who took over the franchise of Miss World Philippines in January 2011. It was also sweet vindication – Gwendoline Ruais joined Bb. Pilipinas 2010 but was left out of the semi-finals Top 5, a painful experience for her and her family. Now, with her Miss World 1st Runner-up status, the pressure is on for Miss Cory Quirino to find another Filipina who will shine in 2012!
8) ATHENA IMPERIAL WINS ELEMENTAL TITLE IN MISS EARTH 2011!
Although her victory was a controversial one, ABQ was thrilled for Athena Imperial when she entered the Top 5 of Miss Earth 2011. It is remarkable how she defied the stereotype that beauty queens must be tall. At 5 feet 6 inches tall, she represents the ‘petite’ Filipina who stays humble but battles it out to the end, thankful for what blessings she receives. So proud of Athena, goddess of power and beauty!
9) ISABELLA MANJON WINS THE MISS CHARITY AWARD IN THE MISS TOURISM QUEEN INTERNATIONAL 2011
Isabella Manjon gave the Philippines some wonderful post-Christmas news! She won Miss Charity, one of the special awards in Miss Tourism Queen International 2011 held in Xi-an, China on December 27, 2011. Click here to read all about the whirl-wind preparations Isabella Manjon had to go through for the pageant!
10) DIANA SUNSHINE RADEMANN WINS MISS SPEC PERSONALITY IN MISS TOURISM INTERNTIONAL 2011
Even on the last day of 2011, the Philippines shined brightly when Diana Sunshine Rademann won
the Miss Spec Personality award in the Miss Tourism International 2011 in Malaysia! Diana Sunshine Rademann was Mutya ng Pilipinas’ 1st Runner-up this year, but due to schedule problems with their two main winners, Mutya ended up sending Diana. Read my article on her here!
BEAUTY QUEENS WHO ALSO DID THE PHILIPPINES PROUD!
Angelee Claudett delos Reyes – won Miss Internet Popularity in Miss Bikini International 2011 and entered the semi-finals of the contest which was held on September 27, 2011 in Qing Dao, China.
Czarina Gatbonton – in October 2011, the former Bb. Pilipinas World 2010 won 2nd Runner-up in Miss Humanity International 2011 beauty contest held in Barbados!
******************************************
R.I.P.
The year 2011 also saw the passing of two beauty queens who are loved by Filipino pageant fans -
AMPARO MUNOZ, MISS UNIVERSE 1974
On February 27, 2011, Amparo Munoz, Spain’s one and only Miss Universe (who was crowned in Manila in 1974) had passed on at age 56 after a long battle against an unspecified cerebral disease.
Filipinos love Amparo Munoz since she stayed behind in the Philippines after the Miss Universe 1974 was over. She filmed a movie here with our very own Miss Universe 1968 Gloria Diaz. It’s titled “Hayop sa Ganda” and I’ve been wondering how to translate that title for the benefit of my foreign readers. The closest I can think of is “Animalistic Beauty”… LOLOL! Just teasing Yo tengo MUCHO MUCHO respeto para Amparo Munoz y Gloria Diaz!
EVA EKVALL, MISS UNIVERSE 2001, 3RD RUNNER-UP
Pageant fans across the globe received some terrible news days before Christmas 2011. Eva Ekvall, Miss Venzuela 2000 lost the battle against breast cancer at the age of 28. Even more heartbreaking is that she left behind a little 2 year old daughter and a loving husband who posted a photo on Twitter showing his hand holding hers, resting on the hospital bed. The caption on the photo, “Always together… I love you wife.”
To my dear dear readers – if there is anything I missed in my list, please drop a note in the comments section, I would appreciate hearing about the beauty queen stories that rocked your life!
With Miss Cory Quirino on the screening panel at the MOA leg of Miss World Philippines 2012. Check out the crowd behind us!
The heat is building up at the Miss World Philippines camp as the search for candidates this 2012 enters its final week.
ABQ had the privilege of being on the screening committee of the MOA leg. The committe included Miss World Philippines franchise holder Cory, Quirino, beauty pageant analyst Lex Librea, 1st Princess MWP 2011 Nikette Henson, 4th Princess MWP 2011 Jaysel Arrozal and 3rd Princess MWP 2011 Bianca Paz.
I saw many familiar faces among the 29 girls who tried out -
Queenie (Queenierich) Rehman who won Best in Swimsuit in Bb Pilipinas 2011
Carla Lizardo who won Mutya ng Pilipinas Intercontinental 2011 2010
Ross Misa who was a contestant and Semi-finalist in Bb Pilipinas 2010…
And…
Two girls who recently won in the Miss Lions Clubs International 2012 pageant which I emceed a week ago – Larah Lacap who won the Lions World title and Rufaida Babudin, the Lions Mutya winner.
The Final Screening will take place on June 5 (tentatively at Broadway Centrum) when the official list of candidates for Miss World Philippines 2012 will be determined and announced!
According to Cory Quirino, 25 girls will be chosen on June 5. Coronation Night will be June 24, 2012, at Manila Hotel’s Tent.
Best wishes to Cory Quirino, Miss World Philippines and all the ladies who will be at the final screening!

Queenierich Rehman glows as she wears her Miss World Philippines 2012 crown for the first time!
What a thrilling beauty pageant – so many beautiful girls but only one throne to fill. And it was won by no other than Queenierich Rehman on the night of June 24, 2012 at the Manila Hotel!!!
ABQ congratulates the winner Queenie Rehman as well as the Miss World Philippines team headed by Miss Cory Quirino for a second successful year. Good job on TV5 for being the new media partner of Miss World Philippines!

Expectations were high for the Miss World Philippines 2012 for several reasons, but here are the three top ones for me:
-The move of the MWP Franchise to TV5 from GMA7. We know just how competitive TV5 is.
-The contestants were truly beautiful. This was one of the hardest batches to choose a winner from.
-Gwendoline Ruais represented the Philippines so well last year in Miss World, bringing home the 1st Princess title (1st Runner-up). The victory added much value to the MWP Franchise and increased everyone’s expectations for 2012.
Did this year’s pageant meet our expectations? Let’s see…
The VENUE: 8 out of 10 Tiaras.
At the Manila Hotel Tent watching Miss World Philipppines 2012 with Zenaida Seifert, Mom of Miss Earth beauty queen Sandra Seifert
The Manila Hotel is the most prestigious hotel in the country for it’s rich history – it is the royalty among hotels in the Philippines so it is a fitting venue to crown Miss World Philippines. But holding it at the TENT of Manila Hotel got me a bit worried. I was thinking that maybe I should show up in my girlscout uniform… but seriously, when I arrived at the venue, my worries dissipated – MWP and TV5 dressed up the Tent interior so well that it didn’t feel like at tent. There was a walkway lined with black and white close-ups of each contestant and there was a corner with a throne and a crown for photo ops!
Only one drawback to the place - it’s small. But then again, maybe an intimate venue is better than a cavernous hall for a classy beauty pageant.
The STAGE: 6 out of 10 Tiaras
Miss World Philippines 2012 stage behind me and Lex Librea. Circles and curves seem to be the in-thing in pageants these days…
Don’t get me wrong – 6 is NOT a low rating. It’s much higher than what I would rate last year’s stage – a 3. I just couldn’t say it last year because I love Cory Q and the MWP Franchise. So 6 is a BIG improvement from last year’s stage.
Good things about the stage: It gave a festive feel and really lifted up my mood, even during the long wait for the pageant to start. It did not take away attention from the contestants either. Loved the video screen set-up too.
Not so good things about the stage: While it was festive, it also exuded the feeling of a noon-time show. Hoping we can veer away from that next time. Also, it was a T-shaped stage and with the TV5 cameramen all over the place, it was hard to take photos from our seats in the VIP guest area behind the judges. An H-shaped stage or a regular big, rectangular stage combined with choreography that keeps the needs of ALL photographers in mind would have been better.
The Hosts: 7 out of 10 Tiaras (would have been 9.25, read below to know why)
Ruffa Gutierrez and Edu Manzano host the Miss World Philippines 2012 beauty pageant at Manila Hotel’s Tent
Edu Manzano – 10 Tiaras! Edu is always very entertaining without being too irreverent. Out of all the pageant hosts we’ve been using in recent years, he is the best for me. Goooood choice TV5 and MWP!
Ruffa Gutierrez – 9 Tiaras! Also an excellent choice! She is far ahead of all beauty queens when it comes to hosting, thanks to her Talk Show experience and excellent English skills. And I love it that she didn’t change her gown three or four times like so many big event hosts do. It simply speaks confidence. PS. She was celebrating her bday!
Mr. Fu and Pat Fernandez – 9 Tiaras! Loving them both! I have always been a fan of Mr. Fu who is so talented and am proud that we are textmates, LOL! Fu and Pat gave a fun vibe and connected well with the Twittering audience. Also, so very happy to see another beauteous and smart Bb. Pilipinas winner in MWP!!!
The two handsome young men that were anchoring weren’t up to par though. They kept looking down at their cue cards and fumbling through them. I believe a teleprompter would have aided the two young men better. Or maybe if they partnered one of the young handsome guys with a seasoned pageant commentator….
The Pageant Proper: 7 out of 10 Tiaras
This year’s show was far more exciting compared to last year’s! I admit that I wrote a very positive review of last year’s pageant even if it fell short of expectations but I just didn’t have the heart to be so critical because it was Cory Quirino’s first time to stage the Miss World Philippines and all virgins deserve extra patience. Anyway, let me run through the pageant proper:
Theme: Filipiniana – this idea is a WINNER!
Opening Number – Loved the Ati-Atihan dance number with GForce!
Acknowledgement of Last Year’s Winners – a beautiful touch
Videos: The Videos on Laguna were generally entertaining. But I didn’t quite like the swimsuit video where they had the girls doing freestyle posing. Not all the girls kasi are good at it. Even I’m not good at it. Interesting observation: the girls looked heavier on the video than on stage. Really shows that TV is unhealthy for you, LOL!
Introduction of Judges: Oh, where is Manny Pacquiao? He was a judge last year and I was hoping to see him again! Anyway, I was happy with the roster of judges but stupid me, I totally forgot to have a photo taken with the beautiful Lorna Tolentino whom I am a total fan of. But I did get one with Sen. Bong Revilla. Good idea too to have a top photographer like Raymond Isaac on the panel. Wishing tho that there was one beauty queen helping us choose our winners…
Long Gown Competition: The gowns were gorgeous and I could see so many of the newbie contestants walking more gracefully than ever! The music – instrumental versions of songs by the Eraserheads, Rivermaya and Teeth – touched me to the core. Those songs mean so much to me and I’m sure to many Filipinos who were watching on TV!
Announcement of Top 12: The only one thing I am sad about is that there was no pre-pageant for the judges to meet the girls, unlike last year. So the judges had to choose the Top 12 cold. Maybe this is the reason why some of the girls expected to enter the Top 12 did not. I was speaking to one contestant, afterwards, and she told me that she was preparing hard for the pre-pageant meeting with the judges but when she realized there wasn’t going to be one, she felt her chances of entering the Top 5 went down.
Serenading the Top 12: One of my favorite segments – Seeing the Top 12 in colorful Ternos was refreshing! This year, MWP was more careful with color-coordination because last year, half the semi-finalists were in RED! I loved the three OPM Rock singers who serenaded the Top 12 – Ebe Dancel being my MOST FAVORITE. The other one was from Calla Lily. They sang Apo songs. Can anyone tell me who the other guy was? I got so busy blogging on my phone at the time. It was funny because none of them could get too close to the girls who towered over them like trees. LOL!
Announcement of Top 5: Wishing that there was a Q&A for the 12 and then the judges judge. Specially since there was no pre-pageant judging. But MWP did it the other way – chose the Top 5 then did the Q&A. The one benefit is that its a big time saver.
Performing the theme song of Miss World Philippines – Jay Durias (on keyboards) and Joey Generoso singing
MWP Theme Song: Performed by Jay Durias and Side A singer Joey Generoso. Mabuhay ang OPM!
The Q&A Segment: MWP chose the best questions thru Twitter suggestions. Now WHY didn’t I think of that? Also, projecting the question on a screen must have been a reaction to Bb. Pilipinas 2012 where two contestants misheard their questions. It is a good idea for the girls to be able to read their questions so that there is less chance of embarrassing moments. Host Edu Manzano was a big help too, he read the questions twice, slowly and clearly.
Deliberation of Judges: usually the most boring time of any pageant. But very necessary when the competition is tight. However, this is a good time to go to the washroom or make chika. BUT, I wish there was some form of informal entertainment like in Bb. Pilipinas 2012 where the hosts started to sing impromptu and we all discovered that Venus Raj could sing like a bird. THAT was FUN!
Me and my hubby and photographer, Ron B. Titular during the judges deliberation which took about 30 minutes!
Brains and Beauty Award: This award was given right before the announcement of the winners. It went to the girl who gave the best answer. I was SO scared that this award was some form of consolation -to be given to the girl with the best answer so that if another girl wins, at least the one with the best answer gets some form of recognition. The idea is brilliant, I think, AS LONG AS IT IS NOT A FORM OF CONSOLATION. And it wasn’t. Because the girl who won it was the girl who won the crown – Queenierich Rehman!
Coronation: I despise that Throne. It was so far back pa on the stage. Hard to take photos. Also, I have mixed feelings about the crowns. The problem naman with the crown of the winner Queenierich Rehman was that it kept falling off her head. What’s up with these falling crowns? It happens in a lot of pageants. We need to perfect the science of attaching crowns to heads!
One observation: there wasn’t a major, major group huddle after the winner was announced. It suggests that this wasn’t a very friendly pageant. I am more used to pageants where the photographers have to tear the winners away from the other contestants because they are all hugging and crying in a huge huddle. There was very little of this and it kind of makes me sad because of the implications. Sigh…
Miss World Philippines 2012 Winners – L-R – 3rd Princess April Love Jordan, 1st Princess Ross Misa, Winner Queenie Rehman, 2nd Princess Vanessa Amman and 4th Princess Brenna Gamboa
To TV5 Production Staff: Congratulations for the level-up on Miss World Philippines 2012! You all worked SO hard for this and I feel that you all did an excellent job! I’m sorry na nagka-intriga with Miss World 2011 1st Princess Gwen Ruais and her Mom. But Miss Cory is right, we can all rise above our personal differences. Thanks for the sleepless nights just to make this year’s pageant a challenge to other big Philippine pageants! I hope you take my comments well because I really do mean well and just want MWP to get better and better!
To Miss Cory Quirino and the MWP staff: Hoping you take my comments well. I support you 100% and believe that you are raising the bar of beauty pageants in the Philippines. Congratulations on a successful 2nd pageant but the work is not yet over. It’s training time and we don’t have much of it since the Miss World is in August na. God bless Queenine Rehman and her training team!
To my darling ABQ Readers: Sorry for this long and rambling post, I hope you enjoyed it anyway. I would love to hear your comments and reviews. Negative comments and reviews are welcome as long as they:
1) Add value,
2) Are sincere and respectful,
3) Do not attack people or organizations,
4) Contain no kabastusan.
Remember, this blog is like my living room and guests should act accordingly. I reserve the right to determine which comments can be published. I love you all, even the haters but haters have to leave their comments outside or just go to a different blog to dump their trash.
Nevertheless, thanks to all ABQ readers, without you, this blog is nothing…
IMHO, charity work is one of the most important duties of a beauty queen. In fact, I am of the opinion whether you’re joining a beauty contest or not, you should try to do a good amount of volunteer work. The beauty pageant that is most associated with serious charity work is Miss World which has the theme, “Beauty with a Purpose”.
And I’m happy to announce that last September 21, 2012, the Miss World Philippines franchise received a generous donation from Esquire Financing which handed over a One Million Peso check to our reigning Miss World Philippines Queenierich Rehman! What a blessing!
The money will be purposefully used by Queenie Rehman and the Miss World Philippines team, headed by Cory Quirino, to do projects with Tuloy Foundation’s 800 streetchildren and with PGH which caters to the needs of 50,000 charity ward patients.

Gratitude from the bottom of our hearts to Esquire Financing for its generosity to the less fortunate and for putting it’s trust in the Miss World Philippines team! Thanks also to Miss World Philippines Secretariat for all the photos on this blog post.
I encourage other beauty queens and pageant groups to take charity work to a higher level and not just make it a sideshow to beauty. If us beauties really want to make an impact on this world, let’s find ways to be thoughtful and kind to those who need love and attention!

Miss World 2012 Wenxia Yu arrived in Manila today along with Miss World founder Julia Morley. This is the first time for Wenxia Yu to visit the Philippines and her first time to celebrate the Chinese New Year away from family but the beauty queen is far from sad. In her stilted English she said, “I’m very happy to be in the Philippines, it is a great experience! I miss my family but I can Sykpe them.”
Wenxia Yu welcomed the Press at The Manila Hotel – her official residence while in town and will be available for a meet and greet with fans and Miss World supporters at MOA. Scroll down for her itinerary.
As the 5’10 opera singer entered the function room I thought – what a beautiful cat-like beauty! Tilted eyes, pointed chin and a sparkling complexion. But she was more kitten than tiger – extremely polite and soft- spoken. The first thing she did was shake hands with each of the Press folk seated at the table starting with me.
In the photo: L-R Cory Quirino (MWP Directress) Gwendoline Ruais (MW 1st Princess 2011), Miss World 2012 Wenxia Yu, Julia Morley (MW Founder) and Queenie Rehman (MWP 2012 and MW 2012 finalist)
China may not be my favorite country at the moment, given the territorial dispute between that nation and the Philippines, but Wenxia Yu’s sweet disposition and lack of airs warmed my heart. Yes, she is beautiful but that doesn’t always impress me. Its the spirit behind the beauty that counts.

The best part of the Press Con came when someone asked her to sing. I was waiting to see what she would do; would she gamely sing for us or would she decline on some excuse? Even Julia Morley, who is very protective of her queens, glanced at her worriedly and asked if she was comfortable with the request. But Wenxia Yu was already holding the mic, ready to sing. That’s when she captured my heart – she showed a true willingness to make her audience happy! Will post the bid later. She sang a Chinese traditional song.
Miss World 2012 Wenxia Yu will only be in Manila for 3 days. Here is her itinerary:
Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013
3:30pm – Press Con Manila Hotel
7pm – Special Chinese New Year Dinner at Mandarin Hotel. Aside from Miss World 2012 Wenxia Yu, guest of honor is Vice President Jejomar Binay.
Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013 (Kung Hei Fat Choi)
11:30am Wreath -Laying at Jose Rizal Shrine in Luneta.
12nn – Ribbon Cutting for an Art Exhibit at the Manila Hotel
2:30 to 3:30pm – Meet and Greet Miss World 2013 at SM Moa. This is your chance to have photos with Wenxia Yu and ask for her autograph!
Monday – Feb 10, 2013
Charity Day! Miss World 2013 Wenxia Yu and Julia Morley will be spending the day at PGH visiting the patients in the different wards.
It is going to be very special visit for Julia because she will be reunited with little Sunshine Sison whom she met in 2011. Sunshine is a heart patient at PGH who touched the heart of Julia Morley. Since then, the Beauty with a Cause arm of Miss World has been supporting Sunshine’s medical needs. When they first met 2 years ago, Sunshine could not get out of bed a d struggled with every breath. But thanks to Julia, she is now able to run and play and enjoy her childhood!
Kung Hei Fat Choi!!!

Three different types of beauty – I love them all! Gwendoline Ruais (left) is French Pinay, Wenxia Yu (middle) is Chinese and Queenierich Rehman (left) is Middle Eastern Filipina
Adventures of a Beauty Queen author Joyce Ann Burton Titular FINALLY meets the legendary Julia Morley, founder of Miss World. She was so warm and seemed genuinely happy to meet us all!
Wow! I just noticed that we were all wearing solid bright colors. I’m on the left in purple, Jullia Morley is in orange and the va-va-va-voom Cory Quirino is the lady in red.
Every year, my family and I attend the FILA Polo Cup – it’s become a tradition for me, my hubby Ron and daughter Diandra to hang and let loose for a few hours while watching FILA owner Butch Albert play Polo with his friends at the Polo Club. But most of the time, I’ve got my eyes on the beautiful people in the audience, like Chris Albert who is the gorgeous wife of Butch and an honorary beauty queen in my book!
This year’s FILA Cup was extra special because it was also Butch Albert’s birthday AND….
Miss World 2012 Wenxia Yu was a surprise guest!!!! Even I was surprised when they announced that she was going to arrive! I also got to see other gorgeous beauty queens… check it all out below:
Miss World 2012 Wenxia Yu (in green) arrived with Miss World founder Julia Morley (pink), Miss World Philippines Directress Cory Quirino (red) and Miss World Philippines 2012 Queenie Rehman. In orange is our hostess, the Queen of FILA, Chris Albert!
Diandra ‘tamps down the divets’ – a term used in Polo which means stomping on the upchucked earth after a Polo Match. The audience is invited to do this after a game is concluded… it’s apparently a Polo tradition!
Even Mr. World 2012 1st Runner up Andrew Wolff (left) was present at the FILA Polo Cup 2013 with a friend named Chris…
With another Bb. Pilipinas Universe winner – the wildly beautiful and highly controversial Maribel Lopez… I just love her!
In orange is the stunning Chris Albert, queen of FILA with Borgy Manotoc (in blue) and the lovely Georgina Wilson (right)…

Don’t expect to see any buxom beauty queens in bikinis like this at Miss World 2013!
Miss World organizers say Indonesian authorities have banned two-piece swimsuits, a sensitive subject for the highly conservative Muslim nation. Instead, the contestants will be competing in one-piece suits with sarongs. Read more about it in this Fox News article…
Cory Quirino, National Director for Miss World Philippines says, “This is to be expected because Indonesia is a Muslim country. But it will not affect how the Philippines chooses it’s winner. We will still have the same swimsuit competition with contestants in bikinis, but as you know we always do it tastefully.”
She adds, “We still have to choose a stand-out beauty with a great body because even if contestants will be wearing a one-piece suit with a sarong in Indonesia, you can still tell if they are well-toned or not. Besides, there might be a closed-door judging, who knows? If the rules allow that then the Philippine representative has to be really fit.”
L-R Cory Quirino (MWP Directress) Gwendoline Ruais (MW 1st Princess 2011), Miss World 2012 Wenxia Yu, Julia Morley (MW Founder) and Queenie Rehman (MWP2012) at Manila Hotel.
At the moment, Cory Quirino is busy with last minute preps for the Miss World Philippines 2013, the winner of which will be crowned in late August. “We don’t have much time for training the winner. Just one week and then she needs to fly to Indonesia for the Miss World 2013 in September.”
Does this mean that polished girls with extensive training are going to have an edge in the pageant? Cory Quirino says, “well, I’d love to have a polished winner, it will make training much easier. But if you are a newbie, don’t be afraid. You can still win. We need a stand-out beauty with a strong desire to win. If that describes you, then please go download an application form on the Miss World Philippines official website and send it in!”
So far, Cory says there will be at least one big pre-screening in a Metro Manila mall with the final screening to be held on July 30, 2013. She promises to cast a wider net next year to include Filipina contestants from the USA, Canada and Europe.

Today (July 23, 2013) was supposed to be the final screening of Miss World Philippines 2013 but ABQ got some good news. According to MWP National Director Cory Quirino, Miss World Philippines is adding one more screening day: Monday, July 29, 2013 at Solaire. Several groups from the provinces are asking for an extension to give their girls time to travel to Manila.
ABQ had the honor of sitting on the screening panel and meeting 21 lovelies who hope to enter the official list of candidates of Miss World Philippines 2013. Here are photos from the event…
L-R #1 Roselle Marie Ferrer, #2 Mariel Guinto Olea, #3 Frances Claire Vintola, #4 Mary Lyssa Abayon, #5 Karla Patricia Alas

Some of the judges who screened the ladies – L-R Gwendoline Ruais, Queenierich Rehman, Cory Quirino, ABQ and Jeffrey Mangali
ABQ was very excited to see some familiar faces at the screening of Miss World Philippines 2013. Most of them have competed in Bb. Pilipinas and one is a known celebrity in the country. Will their experience or fame give them an edge above the other ladies? Or will they suffer humiliating rejection when the final list of official contestants is released on Monday, July 29, 2013? Only God knows! Here are those familiar faces:
Megan Young is a famous celebrity actress in the Philippines who has graced the cover of many glossy magazines. She reportedly tried out for Bb. Pilipinas Gold 2013 but was turned away because of a sexy photo spread.
*****
Patricia Lae Ejercitado was a favorite for the crown in Bb. Pilipinas 2012. Although she didn’t win, this doll-like beauty entered the Top 12. Click here to see the list of Bb. Pilipinas Top 12 in 2012.
*****
Ria Rabajante was previously seen as Contestant #1 in Bb. Pilipinas Gold 2013. Although she was unplaced, she was a favorite of many pageant fans. Ria is best known for her slinky catwalk style. Click here to see Ria Rabajante as Contestant #1 in Bb. Pilipinas Gold 2013.
*****
KC Cahandig is best remembered for entering Bb. Pilipinas Gold 2013 in the middle of the pageant after she was chosen to replace disqualified candidate Theresa Fenger. Click here to read my story on KC Cahandig replacing Theresa Fenger.

Karla Patircia Alas was previously in Miss Philippines Earth 2013 where she represented Las Pinas.

Clockwise from Top Left – Me with Ross Misa; April Love Jordan, Jenny Syquia who sat on the panel of judges and Gwendoline Ruais with one of the lovely ladies in the secretariat of MWP.
Had a really warm chat with Ross Misa who was Miss World Philippines 1st Princess in 2012. I didn’t realize just how friendly she was until she sat next to me and made me kwento while I was having a cup of coffee. She told me about her plans once her tour of duty with MWP expires – she’s either going to study Interior Design at the Philippine School of Interior Design (where I studied) or fly off to New York and try it out there.
I also got to have some one-on-one time with Jenny Syquia who shared her passion for animals with me. She is currently part of the movement to free Mali, the elephant at the Manila Zoo and transfer her to an elephant sanctuary in Thailand. Aside from that, she’s hoping to produce a reality TV show featuring her daughter Chloe Concepcion.
April Love Jordan was excited to tell me that she is the current Ambassadress of Solaire Resort and Casino. She loves her job and gets to attend all the key events of the hotel.
Before leaving the event, I got to tell Gwendoline Ruais, Miss World 2011 1st Princess, a little bit about my experience as an episode judge on her reality show Gusto Kong Maging Beauty Queen. Although she wasn’t present during my taping, she had heard that I made many of the girls cry! Have I turned into a terror? Find out when you watch my episode on Gusto Kong Maging Beauty Queen on Studio 23.
All in all, it was a wonderful afternoon meeting all the MWP hopefuls and hoping that I see all their beautiful faces on the Miss World Philippines 2013 stage!

Ten more beauties made it to the final screening of Miss World Philippines 2013, some of them were a pleasant surprise! The final screening was held at the main office of Miss World Philippines on Tomas Morato, QC. Here were the final ten applicants:
(Note: we start at #22 since last Monday we screened #1 – #21 at Solaire)
#22 Zahra Bianca Saldua – the only Muslim applicant. Absolutely gorgeous! With no pageant experience. Inspire to join Miss World Philippines 2013 after she learned that the winner would be sent to the Muslim nation of Indonesia to compete in Miss World 2013.
*****
#23 Vina Openiano – fresh from Mutya ng Pilipinas 2013. Vina Openiano was candidate #29, placed in the Top 10 and won Best in Swimsuit.
*****
#24 Nicole Marable – she just won Miss Makati 2013 last Saturday. Also competed in Bb Pilipinas 2012 and was contestant #3 in that pageant.
*****
#25 Maureen Cay Caliste – Fresh face. Has joined a Baranggay-level pageant and won two special awards.
*****
#26 Zandra Flores – Fresh from Mutya ng Pilipinas 2013, placed in Top 10 and won Press Favorite and Miss Photogenic in that pageant. She also competed in Bb Pilipinas Gold 2013 and was contestant #2.
*****
#27 Bianca Paz – She was 3rd Princess in Miss World Philippines 2011. She is back to win the MWP 2013 crown, minus 17 lbs and looking fabulous!! Her previous pageant experience includes Bb. Pilipinas 2009 where she was candidate #6. She tried out for Bb. Pilipinas 2011 again but was disqualified due to sexy photos.
*****
#28 Mercegrace Raquel – we saw her compete in Bb. Pilipinas Gold 2013 as contestant #28. She was supposed to represent the Philippines in the recent Miss Humanity International 2013 beauty pageant but didn’t go.
*****
#29 Janicel Lubina – The reigning Slimmers World Miss Bikini Philippines 2013. Slimmers World allowed her to join Miss World Philippines 2013. Janicel Lubina is also the reigning Miss Scuba Philippines 2012 winner.
*****
#30 Paula Estenso – The tallest applicant at 6′ flat. We saw her last at Body Shots 2013 and at Slimmer’s World Miss Bikini Philippines 2013 where she was candidate #34.
*****
#31 Angelica Lopez – fresh beauty with no pageant experience. Another lovely possible addition to MWP’s list of official candidates.
The girls were informed by Miss World Philippines Director Cory Quirino that they will receive texts before 7pm today (July 29, 2013) confirming if they are indeed in the official list of candidates for Miss World Philippines 2013. Right now we are looking at between 25 and 28 contestants. That number could go up to 30 but we won’t know for sure until Wednesday when the list will be officially announced at the Press Presentation to be held at Solaire.
Miss World Philippines National Director Cory Quirino with salon mogul Jesi Mendez who sat on the screening panel
I first heard that Janicel Lubina was planning to attend the screening of Miss World Philippines 2013 as early as the coronation of Mutya ng Pilipinas 2013. (Janicel was in attendance at Mutya since observing pageants is part of her training). Her handler, Thom Favila approached me in the make-up room and asked what I thought. I said, “Basta, magpaalam kayo sa Slimmer’s World. Get their blessing first before Janicel goes to the screening.”
You see, Janicel Lubina is the reigning Slimmer’s World Miss Bikini Philippines (2013). But, from what I know, Cory Quirino, National Director for Miss World Philippines, decided to call Slimmer’s World to ask if she could invite Janicel Lubina to the MWP 2013 screening. With a dash of her famous “Cory Magic” she was able to secure the permission of Slimmer’s World.
As a result, Janicel Lubina was able to make the final screening and the news is she passed. Although the news is unofficial, I can vouch for the information since I was one of the judges on the screening panel for MWP this year. Handler Thom Favila also made the announcement on Facebook that Janicel passed screening.
Now here’s where the complication comes in. If janicel Lubina wins Miss World Philippines 2013, she will earn the right to represent the Philippines in the coming Miss World 2013 to be held in Indonesia. Unfortunately, her other international pageant, the Miss Bikini International 2013 (which will be held in China) coincides with Miss World 2013. There is no way she can do both competitions.
So far, an official solution has not been announced since it would be premature to do so. If Janicel doesn’t win Miss World Philippines then there is no problem. But if she does, here is a solution that I think would work well: if Janicel Lubina is the next Miss World Philippines winner, then she should compete in Miss World and Slimmer’s World should get Janicel’s first runner-up to compete in China, in her place. Just my two cents.
So there… I hope this answers all the questions pageant fans have and puts to rest all nasty rumors that have been flying around… IMHO it is to be commended that Slimmer’s World and Miss World Philippines are cooperating for the benefit of contestants and the reputation of the Philippines as a pageant power-house!
Here is a collection of photos that my husband Ron Titular took during the coronation night of Miss World Philippines 2013. We were all expecting Megan Young to win but that didn’t take the fun out of pageant. She had a few tough challengers but she still captured the hearts of the judges. Congratulations to Megan Young and to the Miss World Philippines organization headed by National Pageant Director Cory Quirino!
Click here to read my Megan article for Rappler. It’s about why she won and her chances of winning at Miss World when she represents the country there in September.
MEGAN’S FALL
This photo of Megan Young was actually taken during last-minute rehearsals at 6:30pm, right before showtime. Megan had actually fallen during rehearsals the day before and had hurt her back. Her heel somehow shot thru one of the joins between the stage’s wood paneling. It happened while she was going down a short flight of stairs. In spite of the fall, Megan reportedly wanted to keep rehearsing but the in-house medical staff at Solaire Resort and Casino told her to rest so she just sat down with an ice pack on her back and watched the rest of practice.
Unfortunately, some people started rumors that it was all pretense but ABQ believes Megan Young is not the type to fake something like this just to get some extra rest. However, such talk can’t be prevented during any competition. It’s all part of the rivalry and actually makes things more interesting, don’t you think?
OSMOSIS, BABY!
After the opening number at Miss World Philippines 2013, Megan Young is the first contestant called out to receive a special award – The Best in Fashion Runway. Megan Young is that rare Filipina beauty who can move between the worlds of showbiz, modelling and beauty pageants. That’s what I call Osmosis, baby!
Early special awards winners – L-R – Zahra Bianca Saldua (Miss Friendship), Samantha Mae Bernardo (Miss Talent) and Megan Young (Best in Fashion Runway)
WHO IS MEGAN YOUNG?
From ABQ Correspodent Ronald Villamor: Megan Lynne Young was born on February 27, 1990 in Alexandria, Virginia,U.S.A. She holds dual citizenship, Filipino-American. She entered local show business via GMA7′s reality show “Starstruck” Season 2 and made it to the Top 6 and eventually became a GMA Artist Center talent. After Kapuso, Megan followed her younger sibling, Lauren Young to rival station ABS-CBN 2 and was of Star Magic Circle Batch 13. She was also a celebrity housemate and “The Princess of Charm” in the reality show, ”Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Edition 2″. In 2009, she became one of four VJs chosen by Channel (V) during it’s relaunch.
Newly-crowned MISS WORLD Philippines 2013 Megan Young is the second Actress-turned-Beauty Queen since Sharmaine “Ruffa derived from Europa” Rama Gutierrez represented our nation, Philippines in Miss World twenty years ago. Ruffa finished 3rd in that global contest!
BYE-BYE BIKINI!
This stunning photo of Megan was taken by my hubby Ron T. during the swimsuit competition at Miss World Philippines 2013.
What I really like best about Megan Young’s physique is the way her waistline curves in high but gently from the ribcage then suddenly flares out (but not too much) at her hips. Her model-like shoulders add to the overall look. Thanks to trainer John Jay Cuay who helped this girl get pageant-fit.
Unfortunately for bikini fans, they won’t be seeing Megan in a two-piece at the Miss World 2013. The pageant has scrapped the Beach Body competition and instead will have a Best in Sarong contest. The international pageant is being held in conservative Indonesia where the Muslim faith is not tolerant of showing off too much skin. Bye-bye bikini!
Click here to read here more about the bikini ban.
ABQ <3 FILA !!!
The swimsuit competition continues with the girls parading in their FILA swimwear. FILA is not really known for sponsoring beauty pageant bikinis so it was a pleasant surprise for ABQ to see our 25 Miss World Philippines 2013 contestants wearing stylish but sporty FILA swimwear. I am a total fan of FILA and love their sneakers but now, I’ll be checking out their swimwear as well! Thanks to FILA boss Butch Albert for being a part of the success of Miss World Philippines 2013!
HELLO SARONG!
But even covered up in a Sarong, you can see Megan Young has a knockout body so the bikini ban at Miss World 2013 is not going to be a problem. Besides, Megan is more than just a beautiful face and body. She’s got heart and soul…
Megan Young wins Miss Sports by FILA. Awarding her is queen of FILA Maricris Albert. Assisting Maricris is that cute Brazilian model and FILA endorser Fabio…
FILA <3 MEGAN!
During the second giving-of-special-awards break, Megan Young gets called again as winner of Miss Sports by FILA. She also was chosen as Miss Reducin.
MEGAN IN ERIC DELOS SANTOS
I actually had the honor of seeing this gown four days before coronation night when I went to Eric delos Santos’ shop to fit the gown I was going to wear at Miss World Philippines 2013. They were not yet done with the beading and filigree work at the time but they showed it to me and I knew she was going to look like a queen wearing it. I was bursting with excitement to tell someone about the gown but knowing just how important secrecy is, I kept my mouth shut and told no one, not even my hubby, about what I saw.
BACK IS BEAUTIFUL!
Even from the back, Megan is indeed a sight to behold. Her profile here shows us why she deserved/deserves to win the Miss World Philippines 2013 crown. I wonder if Eric delos Santos will be dressing her up when she competes in Miss World? My guess is she will most likely wear gowns from different designers. But the most important gown will be the one she wears during the main competition. From what I know, the MWP group will meet and deliberate with their most trusted fashion consultants on what Megan should wear in Indonesia.
Megan Young (right) with Ria Rabajante in the foreground. Although Ria did not make it into the Top 13, she remains one of my favorite girls…
MEGAN YOUNG: A LOSS FOR BB. PILIPINAS?
Some have commented on this blog that Megan is a big loss for Bb. Pilipinas – the pageant actually turned her away when she screened earlier this year. The reason being a photo spread for Rogue Magazine where she went topless. HOWEVER, nothing delicate was seen because she had her chest covered. But I tend to agree with others who say that it isn’t really a loss for Bb. Pilipinas because Megan Young fits the Miss World mold perfectly. It’s almost like as if God took out his Miss World cookie-cutter and used that to create her.
THE MEGAN YOUNG SHOW?
After the Long Gown Competition, they gave out a third set of special awards and by this time, the audience kept saying #20 (Megan’s number) expecting her to win every special award. I laughed and told my hubby that it looks like this is the Megan Young Show and even Megan herself looked a bit embarrassed at being called back to receive yet another award.
In the third break she got the Miss World Laguna award, Miss Revlon, Miss Figlia, Miss Bench Body and Miss Olay. Her total medal haul was 8 special awards. None of them though were the key awards – Best in Long Gown (Bianca Paz won this), Best in Swimsuit (won by Janicel Lubina) or Miss Photogenic (also won by Janicel). No matter, the important thing is the CROWN.

MEGAN KNEW SHE WAS GOING TO WIN!!!
The First Q&A Session. During Miss World Philippines 2013, there were two Q&A sessions. During the first one, all Top 13 candidates were asked mostly light-hearted questions. I really loved it that the questions were video questions sent in from people all over the world. Megan’s questions was from Ashra of Hong Kong – “What is your favorite hobby?”
Megan answered: “Well I know I may not look like it but I’m a real avid video gamer… I love playing games.. Im an online gamer. I’m a beauty queen but I love my tech stuff.. so there you go.“
NOTICE that Megan said – “I’m a beauty queen,” even if she was still only a Top 13 finalist at this point. One can argue that all contestants who make it into the finals are beauty queens but the purists will say that only the winners with titles can call themselves that. For me, I think that Megan was already thinking like a queen before she won the crown and her answer was a reflection of her thinking.
The Second Q&A Session. The photo above was taken during the 2nd Q&A session AFTER they had chosen the Top 5. This time, the question which was a video questions from last year’s Miss World Wen Xia Yu (of China) was more serious:
“Why do you want to be Miss World Philippines?”
In a slightly tremorous but firm voice, Megan answered, “A Miss World Philippines is selfless, and to be selfless, you need the heart. If I become Miss World Philippines, I will pour my heart and my soul into helping others which is what Miss World is: beauty in giving.”

TOP 5 FINALISTS!
On Sunday, hours before the pageant took place, I posted my Miss World Philippines 2013 predictions and got 4 out of 5 right – My Top 5 were Megan (check), Janicel Lubina (check), Bianca Paz (check), Zahra Bianca Saldua (check) and Patricia Ejercitado. Too bad Pat didn’t make it, although she was in the Top 13. The girl who made it into the Top 5 instead of Pat was Omarie Osuna, an Olongapo beauty queen that I liked as well…
TA-TA FOR NOW, PAT!
I saw Pat afterwards and had some photos taken with her. I asked if she was going to join again but she said it was unlikely because at 24 going on 25 yo, she’s ‘overaged’ or at least is going to be. But she didn’t seem too sad about it just a little wistful. I asked what she was going to do and she said, “I’ll focus on Interior Design.” Perhaps when she’s older she can join one of the Mrs pageants for Moms and wives… i still haven’t given up on this girl!
The last 3 girls are numbers 5, 10 and 20 – L-R – #5 Zahra Bianca Saldua, #10 Janicel Lubina and #20 Megan Young
THE LAST 3 STANDING
After Omarie Osuna was announced 4th Princess and Bianca Paz 3rd Princess, these three beauties above were that last 3 girls standing.
Just a word on Bianca – I’m grateful that she won 3rd Princess and Best in Long Gown which is basically the same awards she won when she joined MWP two years ago. But I am sad that she didn’t achieve what she set out to do and that’s win the MWP 2013 crown.
THE BLUE GIRL OR THE WHITE GIRL?
My guess was that Janicel and Megan would be the last two girls standing. While I am a fan of Janicel (I love her lifestory on how she overcame poverty and is now providing for her brothers and parents), in my heart I know that Megan Young is the rightful queen in this game of thrones.
Top photo -The announcement is made and Megan is the winner! Middle – Megan acknowledges Janicel her main rival… Bottom – and gives her a hug. (MWP 2013)
AND THE WINNER IS… MEGAN!
Finally, the winner is announced and it’s Megan Young! The audience expected her to win but that expectation didn’t dampen their cheering when she was proclaimed Miss World Philippines 2013. Not only was Megan Young the most beautiful an gracious, she was also the best choice, IMHO, in terms of strategy. A marriage between Megan and MWP is far more strategic because she can bring the gloss of her celebrity to the pageant franchise (MWP needs more fame) while MWP can give her that rare and coveted ‘royalty status’ of being a national beauty queen. Theirs is a symbiotic relationship with exponential powers very much like the strategic royal weddings in the old days.

“1000% READY!”
When ABQ/Sash Factor correspondent Raymond Golez interviewed Megan Young after her victory, she told him that she was 1000% ready. (That’s right, there are 3 zeroes there!) Although she was considered a top contender in MWP 2013, she said she didn’t want to put pressure on herself “pero ayaw din naman niya mag-relax lang.” Her victory is somewhat to be a “dream come true” for the “sangkabekihan” or the gay pageant community. (All ABQ can say to that is LOL times 1000%!)

QUEEN OF GAMES
I am pleased that our new queen Megan Young is a gamer. I too am a closet gamer because most people don’t get it when they find out that a 46 year-old beauty queen enjoys computer games, most specially RPGs. In fact, I’m a Final Fantasy fan. But I also enjoy the arcade-type games like Mario and adventure games like Zelda. But I do stay away from the violent formats. I also love word games and puzzles – my phone is packed with game apps that exercise the brain! Hoping that Megan’s love for gaming will show that not all gamers are geeky-looking…
BEAUTY, BRAIN, BODY AND FAME!
Megan Young has the complete package — beauty, body, brains and all the good things that come with fame BUT minus the bad attitude. On the first day of screening at SM Mall of Asia, one of the judges, Mr. World Philippines 2012 Andrew Wolff of the Philippines Volcanoes, brought up her celebrity status. Megan made it clear that she was willing to work as hard as the next girl and did not expect special treatment.
It seems like she lived up to those words, simply because MWP would never let a brattinella, no matter how beautiful, win. After getting to know Cory over the 3 years she has led the MWP franchise, I can see how much she values good character.
TYPHOON MEGAN
While Typhoon Maring was raging outside, Typhoon Megan was storming inside the ballroom of Solaire! Not only did she win the Miss World Philippines 2013 crown, she also took home 8 special awards and gave hope to the thousands of Pinoy beauty pageant fans that we now have a queen who has everything it takes to win the Miss World crown. Our country has never won that international pageant. The closest we have come is First Princess (1st Runner-up) when Evangeline Pascual (1973) and Gwendoline Ruais (2011) competed in their respective years. Ruffa Gutierrez was Second Princess in 1993, twenty years ago, to be exact.

LATE START FOR MWP 2013
Many pageant fans had criticized Miss World Philippines for starting the search so late this year. The winner will only have two weeks to prepare before she flies to represent the Philippines in Miss World. But Cory Quirino said the elections got in the way as well as the search for a new TV station to partner with. But in spite of the late start for MWP 2013, Cory was able to reel in a scintillating batch of contestants this year and with a dash of her famous ‘Cory Magic’ she found Megan Young, a queen worthy of the crown.
THE QUEEN OCCUPIES HER THRONE
I hate to burst anyone’s bubble but I have to admit that I kind of don’t like this throne. Okay, I admit it, I REALLY hate it. But with Megan sitting on it, I’m kind of beginning to like it now. But hoping they scrap the chair next year. It feels too old school.
Megan Young promises to give her heart and soul as she begins her reign as Miss World Philippines 2013
QUEEN OF HEARTS… AND SOUL!
“Why do you want to be Miss World Philippines?”
“A Miss World Philippines is selfless, and to be selfless, you need the heart. If I become Miss World Philippines, I will pour my heart and my soul into helping others which is what Miss World is: beauty in giving.” – Megan Young, Miss World Philippines 2013

MEGAN YOUNG WITH MISS YOUNG…
Sorry, I couldn’t help that joke. To those who may not know (and I guess that means most of you) I was Miss YOUNG Philippines in 1981 so that’s one connection I have with Megan YOUNG, vague as it sounds, hahaha! Another connection – when I came up to congratulate her and take photos, she said that she reads my blog. WOW! What a thrill to hear that from our new queen! And third, we’re both wearing Eric delos Santos gowns. Love it!
An emotional Megan Young faced the press this evening at her official send-off party to the Miss World 2013 beauty pageant. What set her off in tears was news about a personal email sent by Julia Morley, founder of Miss World, to local franchise holder Cory Quirino. The email congratulated Cory for “a very lovely Miss World Philippines.” Julia’s note added, “I look forward to seeing her at Miss World.”
When Cory announced this to the press, Megan couldn’t hold back the tears. It took her some 10 minutes to regain her composure but the audience didn’t seem to be disturbed. It was an unexpected, endearing moment and we were all ready for Megan until she was ok to talk.
“Di dapat ako umiyak kasi nagpapaka-strong ako,” she blurted out at one point in between apologies for her emotional outburst. “But with a letter from Julia, I’m so encouraged!”
Our Miss World Philippines 2013 arrived a bit late at C2 in Greenhills, the venue of her send-off party. She was delayed due to a doctor’s visit to treat congestion and a sore throat. The Fil-Am beauty queen is going thru an intensive 2-week training with wardrobe fittings while squeezing in numerous TV shows and the hectic schedule is taking its toll on her health. But in spite of that Megan Young was very loquacious and wouldn’t stop rambling. “Madaldal ako,” she confirmed. “And I’m emo talaga. I don’t care if people say ang arte ko but I have real emotions.”
When asked what was her priority as she trains for Miss World 2013, Megan Young said, “I’ll be upfront with you. I was never really a sporty person but as I grew up I got active. I’m working really hard now on my fitness and focusing on physical strength.” Miss World, which will be held in September 2013 has a Sports Track where the candidates compete in sporty activities. With a laugh, Megan added, “I am up to the challenge and ready to do pushups and situps!”
Meantime, fans can help Megan win the Multimedia Award by visiting the official Miss World Philippines Facebook and commenting on everything she posts. IT experts from the UK will be judging the Facebook pages of all the contestants and the one they deem the best will be catapulted into the semi-finals.
Okay… not that Megan needs the help but lots of followers greeting her online will make her feel loved and give her that extra-confidence!

Later in the evening her princesses finally arrived – Zahra Bianca Saldua (2nd Princess) and Janicel Lubina (1st Princess). Unfortunately, Omarie Osuna (4th Princess) who is from Olongapo and not used to Metro Manila got lost and ended up going back home. Bianca Paz (3rd Princess) was at a commitment she couldn’t back out of.
When i finally found time to corner Megan, I asked her more about her not-so-beauty-queen-like hobby of gaming. That interview is coming up in my next post! Keep her in your prayers; she departs for Bali on Tuesday, September 3, 2013.
Meanwhile, mark this date on your calendar – September 28, 2013! GMA7 will be airing the Miss World 2013 beauty pageant starting at 10pm Manila time. You better be watching because “eto na ‘un!” Typhoon Megan will storm Bali and Jakarta and bring home the first ever Miss World crown for the Philippines!
After Megan Young’s victory I texted Miss World Philippines National Director Cory Quirino to congratulate her, Megan and the entire MWP team. She responded with this text:
“It’s destiny! Megan is the first Filipina to win Miss World. The honor is not only Megan’s but the Philippines. We have made history and have proven once and for all that the Filipina is the most beautiful woman in the world! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!”
On the possibility of the Philippines hosting Miss World since we won the crown this year, Cory has this to say:
“I will work doubly hard to make the hosting of Miss World by the Philippines a reality!”
Well, if Cory magic helped us win the elusive Miss World crown then Cory magic can help us achieve the next big dream of all Filiipino pageant fans: to host the Miss World pageant in Manila!!!
Miss World Philippines National Director Cory Quirino (left) with Megan Young, the reigning Miss World 2013
I’ve been dying to see Megan Young since she grabbed the Philippines’ first-ever Miss World title last Sept. 28, 2013. I’m sure you are too. So it was quite exciting to see the above message on Cory Quirino’s Facebook this morning! Megan comes home on Thursday, October 10, 2013!!!
After winning the crown, Megan flew to London for a charity ball and a BBC interview among others. I imagine that she also spent a few days with Miss World Chair Julia Morley to learn the do’s and dont’s of being Miss World. Settling into her London flat must have also been lots of fun!
Can’t wait to see Megan back in Manila and to find out more about what our Miss World 2013 will be up to next!

Dear ABQ Readers,
So sorry I am late in posting photos from Megan Young’s homecoming Press Conference and Dinner. I have lots of kwento for you as well but I was stressed out over an important audition and am caught up in writing an article on Megan for the Philippine edition of Hola Magazine. But I was able to find time to ask Cory Quirino a question that some of my readers raised: Will Janicel Lubina, Miss World 2013 1st Princess be taking over Megan Young’s duties in Manila while she is traveling, doing charity work as Miss World 2013?
This was Cory’s response:
Yes, we are putting our Princesses to work especially for our charities. On our way to Olongapo now – despite the typhoon.
(By the way), thousands flocked the streets on the parade route who braved the rain. Media commented turnout was bigger than a (Manny) Paquiao homecoming on a sunny day. Megan , Julia and I were overwhelmed.
In behalf of Miss World Ph – maraming salamat mga kababayan❤️👑 Miss World loves you!
Oh my! What is it with Megan and the rain? It was storming in Manila too on the nights she won Miss World Philippines AND Miss World. Now, she’s being tailed by more rain! But I’m taking it as sign of good things raining on her and our nation! God bless Miss World 2013 Megan Young and the Philippines!
